Most of the time, it means you can be really relaxed about exploration, knowing there will always be another loop ahead of you. In terms of story and game play, the 22-minute loop has a lot of appeal. The clues left behind by long-dead alien visitors provide a glimpse into their lives and hopes and loves - and their disagreements as to how far their experiments should go - without ever being heavy-handed about it. All the clues fit together, though, and all lead to the same place. You really can explore in any direction and in any order you like, following one line of clues or another. As for the writing, this game should be held up as the very model of how to integrate a tight, coherent narrative into an open-world setting. (I'm tempted to say: "you know, like a game published by Annapurna.") The game-play mechanics are well crafted: navigation - in ship or in suit - and walking work smoothly, and all the tools the player has available function as they should. The aesthetic is stylized, but consistent - and consistently appealing. Each planet may be small - on the scale of hundreds of meters in diameter - but together they offer up a wide variety of dynamic and visually striking environments. The setting is a miniature solar system in which the planets are subject to something like realistic orbital mechanics. The This is very nearly a perfect game: beautifully designed and executed, intelligently written, and engaging from beginning to end. Outer Wilds is one of Player. One's best games of 2019, as evidenced by our perfectly-scored, 10/10 review. In many 20-minute runs, and with the advantage of keeping their memories of every loop, the player must now unveil the mysteries of the time loop, the sun’s mysterious death, and an ancient civilization that seems to hold all the answers. ![]() Instead of dying, however, and in a strange twist of fate, the player character finds themselves once again in front of the idol, bringing them to an endless time loop that ends when they die or when the sun goes supernova. However, two major things happen in the first 20 minutes of the game: the character comes across a strange idol that seemed to have recorded his memories, and the solar system’s sun suddenly goes supernova, annihilating all life in the system. These aliens have their own space program set within an outback, camping-themed civilization, and the player character is chosen as the new rookie for the ongoing space program. Outer Wilds is an incredibly unique exploration game taking place in an alien solar system. On the bright side, this release will be a free upgrade for existing PS4 or Xbox One owners. There’s also no mention if the DLC Echoes of the Eye will be part of the game release, and for now, players can consider it to be a still separate purchase in case you’re getting Outer Wilds on new-gen hardware. ![]() The trailer is very short, and the only improvement it detailed is the 60 frames per second patch for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
